I had a call from a lady called Maggie ,who happened to live very close to me about me doing a Disco for a Surprise 50th Birthday for her husband John. She had spoken to the Epsom Club in Church Road,Epsom,Surrey and was happy that this was a suitable venue. The plan was to tell John that they were to pop in there for one drink before going on somewhere else in Epsom. After agreeing a price Maggie later called me to arrange me picking up a cash deposit, this was done when John was at work,i called on her and we had a chat about the venue and timings.
The 20th January was the big night for John to be suprised by his friends and family,we arrived to set up in plenty of time, this took about 40 minutes but we still had 20 minutes for John to arrive,or so we thought!
One of the guests said that john and Maggie were 5 muinutes away,so i hastily got ready Clliff Richard's Congratulations for the Birthday boy's entry, they took a few more minutes to park, with my roadie observing through the curtains!
As soon as John entered with Maggie everyone shouted they're congratulations to him, including Cliff Richard!
Later on in the evening more Birthday songs were played,by Stevie Wonder and when cutting the cake all the guests sang Happy Birthday, kool and the Gang's Celebration went down well along with other party songs from Dexy's Midnight Runners,Madonna,Deniece Williams,Madness,The Jam,Billy Ocean,Bee Gees and Michael Jackson. There were some good sing a long tunes which went down well from Niel Diamond(Craklin' Rossie and Sweet Caroline)Madness-It must be Love,Ftback Band-I found Loving,Chesney hawks-The one and only. Some R&B was played as well as the Golden Oldies.
The evening finished off at 1am with Mud-Tiger Feet, the Monkees-Daydream Beleiver and the King Elvis Presley with the Wonder of you and a good time was had by all.
